Who is PFA training appropriate for?

  • Everyone involved in paediatric care at any level. The course is more in depth than EPFA (Emergency Paediatric First Aid).
  • Ideal for professional care workers and organisations supporting infants,children and young adults, plus sports groups, venues and gatherings such as churches too.
  • Minimum requirements include:
    • Aged 18 or over
    • Reasonable level of fitness
    • Basic command of the English language

What will I learn on the PFA course?

All of the skills provided on in EPFA training, plus first aid provision for:

  • Suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • Suspected head injury and spinal injuries
  • Conditions affecting eyes, ears and nose
  • Acute medical conditions and sudden illness
  • Extremes of body temperature
  • Electric shock, burns and scalds
  • Suspected poisoning
  • Anaphylaxis

How long does the PFA training course take?

Normally 2 days, in the classroom environment.

This is a 12 hour course. Each day will include 6 hours of instruction.

We suggest allowing a further 1 hour on each of the 2 day for breaks.

How is PFA training regulated? Is there a qualification or certificate?

The PFA courses run by First Aid Suffolk’s Liz Russell are ProTrainings certified courses.

Participant learning is monitored continuously throughout the training sessions. The course finishes with a multiple choice test.

Successful completion of the course results in an official certificate.

How and where does First Aid Suffolk run the PFA course?

We offer this as a 2 day classroom-based course only.

Courses can take place at:

  • your workplace or community space where your groups or gatherings are held, subject to appropriate room/ facilities
  • venues local to Felixstowe or Ipswich in Suffolk, selected as appropriate by First Aid Suffolk.

 

PFA Training Course Details

All our training courses start some necessary ‘admin’ (paperwork for the course, ID, housekeeping etc.), followed by introductions. Instruction sessions are interactive, with participants being continuously assessed throughout. Over the course of the day, there will usually be two short 15 minute breaks and 30 minute lunchbreak.

PFA courses include all EPFA course subjects, plus understanding the roles and responsibilities of the Paediatric First Aider and first aid for :

  • Suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • Suspected head injury and spinal injuries
  • Conditions affecting eyes, ears and nose
  • Acute medical conditions, sudden illness and extremes of body temperature
  • Electric shock, burns and scalds
  • Suspected poisoning
  • Anaphylaxis

There is a multiple choice test for all participants at the close of the training.
