Helping you to make that difference in Felixstowe, Ipswich, Suffolk & North Essex
An Ipswich-based theatre group gave First Aid Suffolk’s Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course the thumbs up when 12 staff members took time to skill up and win confidence in helping others in times of medical need.
Hosting regular performances open to the public, the theatre group thrives off having an audience and has a diverse following for its cultural events and entertainment. But with live performances and the presence of a large audiences come responsibilities too. Time for the team refresh or learn new skills and prioritise first aid preparedness, recognising it as vital for the safety and well-being of the theatre’s public, staff and its actors.
First came the recognition of the need for a comprehensive first aid plan. Then the theatre group sought to ensure that their staff members were adequately trained to respond to any medical emergency that might arise during performances.
Instilling confidence in the team was key. The ability to handle situations effectively and provide timely assistance to anyone in need was the goal and there was a real understanding that the focus had to go beyond just their walk-in customers. Accidents and medical emergencies can just as easily happen outside performance times, to staff and those treading the boards in rehearsals too. What’s that common good luck phrase in the theatre world… ah, yes – Break a leg!
The theatre group commissioned Liz at First Aid Suffolk for an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course. The maximum number on a first aid course is always 12 participants – at the training venue (on site at theatre), it was a full house.

Well, you’d perhaps expect nothing less from a theatre group! The EFAW course provided valuable training to all 12 of the theatre staff members, empowering them with the confidence and skills necessary to address first aid emergencies swiftly and efficiently. The learning was embraced with real spirit as they took in everything from how to assess and respond to medical incidents to how to administer basic first aid and handle situations which might involve a mix of public attendees and fellow colleagues.
“Liz was calm and professional, but made the training fun. I feel confident now that I could deal with an emergency situation.” – EFAW Course Participant
The experience was a real bit of team building fun, with a serious side to it – who would have thought that first aid manoeuvres and the Conga could be a thing?! The training not only enhanced the staff’s competence in first aid, but also reinforced the theatre group’s commitment to safety.
By proactively investing in first aid training for its staff members, this Ipswich theatre group demonstrated a commitment to creating a safe and secure environment for all individuals involved in their organisation and its performances.
We look forward to the encore in three years time, when their skills will need refreshing and their qualifications renewing!
