First Aid Suffolk lands training at gliding club

First Aid Suffolk delivered emergency first aid at work training to a passionate group of flying enthusiasts. As with any sports club, activities have associated risks and it is important to prepare responsibly for every eventuality.

With an 85-strong membership, it is not surprising that the gliding club has a wide variety of people using its facilities. Many members are over the age of 50, but several children also actively participate in club activities. Despite the diverse demographic and potential risks associated with aviation activities, the Club had limited resources in terms of first aid training and emergency response equipment.

It not about the kit, but knowing how to use it

It’s unfortunately an all-too-common situation. The gliding club was the proud owner of a defibrillator at the club site, but in reality there were very few certified First Aiders who would have training in how to use the equipment effectively amongst the membership. This posed a significant concern for handling medical emergencies effectively.

To address the lack of first aid skills within the Club, a decision was made to conduct an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course for 12 members.

Dealing with first aid emergencies from the ground up

The aim of the fully accredited course delivered by Liz Russell who has over 30 years’ experience as a qualified first aid trainer and assessor, was to equip participants with essential first aid skills to respond to medical emergencies effectively when they occur at the premises of the Club.

The training session was designed to be engaging, informative and tailored to the overarching interest of the participants. In turn they not only gained valuable skills, but could appreciate the relevance of what they were taking on board, and ultimately found the learning process a most enjoyable one.

The EFAW course proved to be a success, empowering 12 club members with the necessary knowledge and skills to handle medical emergencies effectively. Participants learned how to administer basic first aid, perform CPR, and how to operate the Club’s defibrillator in case of cardiac events.

The training session not only enhanced the club’s overall emergency response preparedness, but also fostered a sense of confidence among members in dealing with potential medical incidents. The gliding club took a proactive step towards enhancing the safety and well-being of its members and guests whihc is to be applauded.
