At First Aid Suffolk our nationally recognised FAW courses are run in person by Liz Russell, our fully qualified, instructor-assessor, affiliated to the nationally recognised first aid network, ProTrainings. On our courses, we share serious content shared in way that’s not just engaging, but fun and team-building too. Who is the FAW designed for?

  • Everyone. The course is more comprehensive than EFAW (Emergency First Aid at Work) and covers more illnesses and conditions.
  • Ideal for the workplace, sports groups, venues and gatherings such as churches too.
  • All companies or businesses employing staff. Employers are required by law to have some sort of First Aid cover on site.
  • Individuals aged 18 or over, with a reasonable level of fitness and basic command of the English language as a minimum.

 

What will I learn on the FAW course?

Basically all the subjects covered on the EFAW course and so much more!

  • The role of a First Aider including safety regulations
  • Recognising symptoms of a heart attack and cardiac arrest
  • Provision of first aid for an unresponsive adult
  • Carrying out adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Automated External Defibrillator use (AED).
  • Providing help to a choking adult, first aid for burns, scalds, bleeds, shock, plus sprains, strains, breaks, stroke, poisons, head injuries, eye injuries and more…

How long does the FAW course take?

Usually, 3 days in the classroom. This is an 18 hour course.

Each day will include 6 contact hours of training.

We suggest approximately one further hour on each of the 3 days for breaks.

Is there a certificate or qualification and how is it regulated?

The FAW courses delivered by Liz Russell at First Aid Suffolk are ProTrainings certified courses.

There is continual assessment throughout the duration of the training. Participants must also pass a multiple choice test at the end of the course.

Successful completion of the course successfully is  rewarded with a certificate.

How does First Aid Suffolk deliver the FAW course?

We offer this as a 3 day classroom course only.

Courses can take place at:

  • your workplace, subject to appropriate room/ facilities
  • venues local to Felixstowe or Ipswich in Suffolk, selected by First Aid Suffolk.

FAW Course Details

Courses start with all the regular ‘admin’ (paperwork for the course, ID, housekeeping etc.) and introductions. Participants then taught in an interactive manner and are assessed in the following subject areas:

  • HSE (Health & Safety Executive) regulations relevant to the workplace, venues and other group meeting facilities
  • Unconscious casualty.  How to assess and place in the Recovery Position.
  • Non-breathing unconscious casualty. Assess and if necessary, provide CPR. Understand and practice the use of an AED.
  • Provision of first aid for the following:
    • Choking
    • Drowning
    • Serious bleeds
    • Shock
    • Burns and Scalds
    • Epilepsy
    • Minor cuts, bruises, splinters
    • Bone, muscle and joint injuries
    • Head and spinal injuries
    • Suspected chest injuries
    • Eye injuries
    • Poisoning
    • Anaphylaxis
    • Diabetic emergency

There is a multiple choice test at the end of the course for all participants.
